Track Twist Formula

Track twist is the change in cant over a specified distance. It is a critical measure of track surface regularity. The formula is:

$$\text{Twist} = \frac{\Delta \text{Cant}}{\Delta \text{Length}} = \frac{x_{i+1} - x_{i}}{Y}$$

Where:

  • $\text{Twist}$ is in mm/m
  • $x_i$ and $x_{i+1}$ are the cant measurements (in mm) at two successive points
  • $Y$ is the distance between the two measurement points (in m)

The twist is considered:

  • **Acceptable:** $\le 3 \text{ mm/m}$
  • **Marginal:** $> 3 \text{ mm/m}$ and $\le 5 \text{ mm/m}$
  • **Unacceptable:** $> 5 \text{ mm/m}$
